Commonly referred to as TMJ, the temporomandibular joint is what we use to move open and close our mouths. It connects the upper and lower jaws, and it is what makes it possible for us to eat. It is not uncommon to experience some type of TMJ-related pain, and there are several temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) that can affect our wellbeing.
While this issue is located up high and away from the neck in our bodies, chiropractic care is a great treatment option that doesn’t rely on pain medication. Chiropractors focus on noninvasive treatments, as aggressive treatments such as surgery and implants (which require penetrating the tissues of the face) should only be considered as a last resort.
The issues that can come with the TMJ, as well as the muscles and tissues that surround it, are often complex, and the symptoms associated with a TMD do not necessarily mean a patient has a TMJ issue. That said, some of the most common symptoms include: a dull pain located around the ear, which may extend to the side or back of the head, or even down the neck; pain when chewing, biting, talking or simply opening or closing the mouth; earaches and headaches; pain in the jaw or TMJ; or locking of the jaw.
When it comes to TMJ issues, a chiropractor can help manage and care for any tension or dysfunction in the spine. In doing so, chiropractors are able to reduce the pressure that falls on certain nerves, thereby relieving the pain associated with a variety of TMDs. With ongoing trips to Dynamic Chiros, many patients have experienced the longform relief for which they’ve been searching.
If you have experienced pain with your TMJ, or if you’re concerned you’ve developed a TMD, just give Dynamic Chiros a call to set up your consultation. We’ll work with you to determine exactly what the problem is and develop a personalized course of action that will have you living pain free, just like you used to.
