What is sciatica?
Sciatica is a condition the describes inflammation to the largest nerve of the body….the sciatic curve. This is characterized usually by lower back pain and leg pain. The leg pain can travel down to the knee and even down to the foot. It also can cause a weakness in the affected leg.
What causes sciatica?
Typically sciatica has two main causes. Typically it is comes fro a pinched nerve in your lower back and/or a muscle spasm in the piriformis spasm in gluteal region. The pinched nerve in the lower back can come from a misalignment in the lumbar spine that causes a bulging disc, muscle spasm, and inflammation. The piriformis spasms can be caused by a misalignment in the spine that cause a reflexive muscle spasm and inflammation. Prolonged sitting, congenital anomalies, and systemic conditions may also contribute to the problem.
How does chiropractic treat sciatica?
We use adjustments, traction, and rehabilitation exercises to reduce the irritation to the sciatic nerve and muscle spasms. We use our hands, drop tables, and sometimes instruments in order to gentle bring balance back to spine and reduce the irritation to the sciatica nerve.
Is chiropractic successful at treating sciatica?
This is what we call our “bread and butter”. We have not come across another treatment modality that is better at treating this condition than chiropractic. We think this because sciatica usually involves a bone and muscle component, and chiropractic takes an integrated approach by realigning the bones and addressing the muscle component with muscle therapy, massage, and stretching.
