Fibromyalgia is a difficult, debilitating disorder known primarily for widespread musculoskeletal pain that is generally accompanied by sleep, fatigue and issues affecting one’s memory and mood. While not fully understood medically, researchers believe fibromyalgia affects the way in which your brain processes pain signals; instead of feeling pain at a normal level, the pain sensations in these patients are amplified. And there is no known cure.
But that doesn’t mean there is no hope. At Dynamic Chiros, we have had significant success in treating patients with fibromyalgia diagnoses — especially when correcting misalignments in their neck. While any reduction in pain is considered a success when treating this particular condition, we’re proud of the level of comfort we’ve been able to return to our patients.
The short answer: Yes! To match the firsthand success stories we’ve been a part of here at Dynamic Chiros, there are many studies that show just how effective chiropractic care can be in the treatment of fibromyalgia. In fact, a study from the National Center for Biotechnology Information showed a very positive result: “Chiropractic management improved patients’ cervical and lumbar ranges of motion, straight leg raises and reported pain levels.” Another study, titled Chiropractic Management of Fibromyalgia Syndrome: A Systematic Review of the Literature concluded that “Several nonpharmacologic treatments and manual-type therapies have acceptable evidentiary support in the treatment of FMS.”
Pain is something we all recognize. In a moment of pain, the brain stem is accepting a signal from somewhere else in the body, letting a person know that something is causing them physical distress. What we don’t notice is the pain signals that the brain stem chooses to suppress, enabling us to quickly recover from — or ignore altogether — smaller pains that are really just an inconvenience.
But when a person experiences just three millimeters of rotation in the upper cervical spine between two bones, it can cause neurological interference. This interference can induce the body to not suppress the lesser pains we experience, which in turn forces the patient in question to feel more pain than the average person. This can cause fibromyalgia-like symptoms or even exacerbate the pain felt by a fibromyalgia patient.
A chiropractor who fully understands fibromyalgia and the pain it causes can provide sanity-saving pain relief in the form of a head and neck adjustment. In doing so, they help relieve compression on the spine, which can put an end to some of the chronic pain caused by fibromyalgia.
Fibromyalgia is a tough ailment to experience day in and day out. At Dynamic Chiros, we know exactly how to help these patients alleviate some of their pain while granting them better mobility than they had before. If you have fibromyalgia and would like to get a consultation to understand what we can do for your pain management, just give us a call, and we’d be happy to help you on your journey.
