Back pain — specifically lower back pain — is a leading cause of disability and trips to the doctor throughout the world. And in many cases, it goes away within a few weeks’ time. But persistent, chronic back pain can be incredibly debilitating. It affects the costs of healthcare, and can contribute to lost productivity in the workplace. With this level of prevalence, it is surprising that more people aren’t taking advantage of the benefits of chiropractic care.
When studying medicine, nearly all doctors learn the names of the bones and muscles. And, more importantly, most doctors learn the high-level functions of these body parts. Unfortunately, few actually take the time to master the body’s functional movements and how they cooperate with each other in great detail. That is where the role of the chiropractor comes into play.
At Dynamic Chiros, we take a serious approach to the biomechanics of the entire human skeletal system when we assess back pain. Such dedication lends credence to the multiple studies that show how the addition of chiropractic medicine produces better, long-term outcomes in the treatment of back pain than traditional medicine, physical therapy and massage therapy on their own.
When a patient is experiencing chronic back pain, their first trip is usually to a doctor. After assessment, the doctor will most likely prescribe them a drug to either ease the pain or reduce inflammation. However, medication alone is not enough to recover from back pain. In fact, a published in the December 2010 edition of The Spine Journal found that after 16 weeks of care, patients who only sought help from medical doctors saw next to no improvement in their disability scores. Worse, they were likely to still likely to be taking medication.
It was also found that many patients found no benefit with the addition of physical therapy — yet still they weren’t referred to a chiropractor. However, researchers discovered that “treatment including chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy is associated with significantly greater improvement in condition-specific functioning” than standard care provided by a family physician.
A new has also found that, when it comes to back pain, adding chiropractic care to standard medical care can help further reduce patient disability and discomfort. The parameters of the study are as follows: researchers evaluated 750 active-duty U.S. military service members who were being treated for lower back pain. While all of these service members received usual care such as prescription drugs and physical therapy, half of them also received chiropractic care (which could include spinal manipulation, rehabilitation exercises, and treatment with cold or heat.
After just six weeks’ time, the service members who were receiving chiropractic care reported larger reductions in lower back pain, as well as less related disability issues, than the service members who didn’t receive said treatments. Lead study author Dr. Christine Goertz stated “Spinal manipulation (often referred to as chiropractic adjustment) may help heal tissues in your body that form as a result of injury, decreasing pain and improving your body’s ability to move correctly.” She went on to add that “it is also possible that manipulation impacts the way that your body perceives pain through either the brain or the spinal cord and/or decreases pain from muscle strain, inflammation and/or spasm in the muscles next to your spine.”
Another, published in May of 2007, greatly highlights the benefits of managing back pain with chiropractic medicine. Based on more than 70,000 member-months throughout the course of a seven- year period, its clinical and cost utilization showed in-hospital admissions decreasing by more than 60 percent. Also found were 59 percent fewer hospital days, 62 percent fewer outpatient surgeries and a staggering 83 percent drop in pharmaceutical costs when compared to conventional medicine alone.
