What causes shoulder pain?
The shoulder is the only major joint in the body that is held in place by muscles only. This makes the joint very mobile and therefore tough to treat. The most common cause of shoulder pain is injuries to muscles of the rotator cuff. There are four muscles that make up the rotator cuff and they are the supraspinatus, infraspinatur, teres minor and subscapularis. Other common shoulder muscles that cause shoulder pain are the deltoid and teres major. When being evaluated by someone to determine the cause of shoulder pain, make sure that the doctor evaluating knows the function of these muscles and how they interact with each other. This is critical in being able to determine the cause and treatment to fix the pain.
How does chiropractic help with shoulder pain?
Because the cause of most shoulder pains is mechanical in nature, the treatment usually involves correcting the mechanics of the shoulder. Chiropractic doctors are experts in the treating altered biomechanics of the shoulder, neck, midback, and spine. This allows for less friction of the muscles fo the shoulders and therefore better healing of the soft tissues that are causing the pain.
